The high school students at Mn Transitions Charter High school (MTS) (about
400 students) currently use only mass transit as their ride to school. The
elementary and middle school still use Minneapolis Buses. We contract with
the Mpls public schools for both the bus cards and the busses.
The use of the MTC is a very efficient manner to transport
students. We do not have boundaries and students come from all parts of
the Metropolitan area. MTS has two high school sites in the Longfellow and
Seward Communities. I think other charter and alternative schools
use the mass transit system also.
We are pursuing monthly discounts as a means of saving funds. I will
keep in touch as to its progress. We are especially excited about the LRT
station at Lake Street. Our Technology High School is located next to
Target at Hiawatha and Lake.
By the way, I did not see any comments on Minneapolis public schools new
fears that charter and suburban integration are taking away students. http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4192060.html
Minneapolis public schools are going to start competing with charter
schools.
This is a significant change in philosophy by the Board. Formerly,
Board members stated they represented all the public school students including
charter school public students. Now Board members are
commenting they only serve the interests of those who attend Minneapolis public
schools. One School Board member actually criticized charter schools at a
neighborhood meeting for not giving an appropriate education. She did not
state which schools she was concerned with.
