The Library Referendum passes with 67% the voters saying “yes” to libraries, and the capital budget gets chopped. The Park Board does not pass a referendum, but their capital budget gets trimmed.
Did Public Works pass a referendum to show support for their projects? Did the Police Department pass a referendum to show support for their projects? The Libraries used the most democratic method possible to find out what voters want and now that voice is being stifled.
The City Council must restore the funding for Libraries in the out years of the capital budget. To do any less would be a rejection of the voters who put them in office.
