E-Reporting makes it E-asier to file a police report

November 20, 2003 (MINNEAPOLIS) Folks in Minneapolis can now file police
reports online, using the Minneapolis Police Department's new online police
report filing system. Online police reports can be filed to document
vandalism to property or motor vehicle, and lost or stolen property if no
injuries occurred and no suspect information is available.

The City and its Police Department developed the online reporting as a way
to make it easier and faster for people to file police reports. In
addition, e-reports provide another option to the approximately 9,500 folks
who use Teleserve to file police reports over the phone each year. Officers
hope that providing another report filing system will result in fewer
unreported crimes, and will help the department better identify patterns and
trends in crime.

Police used Community Development Block Grants to develop the online
reporting system. The online system enters report information directly into
the Minneapolis Police Department's database, which will save the department
time and money. (Teleserve requires an officer to transcribe information
into a database.)
