Being on West Broadway, The Avenue with the Most Potential, I have dealt with towing issues, and Towing needs.
I watched the junk car market change from "We will tow away your junk vehicle and pay you up to $45, cash" to "You will have to pay me $45 to haul away your junk car". I became curiouser, and curiouser. I am not Studs Terkel; but I may be the closest thing, on West Broadway. I will stop you to chat; and ask you some questions. And listen closely to your answers. Especially if you do work on the Avenue. Meter reader, sheriff's deputy, mailman, housing inspector, road repair, backhoe for the gas company, shop keeper, phone installer, surveyor, locksmith, cop, resident, landlord, social worker, ambulance...and tow truck driver. Man, I love this part of my "job". Fact is, I would have not lasted this long, here, without the information, and the laughs (big ones), garnered by this chit chat. Anyway, I did not understand why the little, but legal, independent tow guy wouldn't take my junk car, for FREE, anymore. Whereas Wrecker Service, that clears my private properties of unauthorized vehicles, would take away anything, anytime, and they didn't even get title from me, and hence, the scrap value. So I asked the driver for Wrecker Service, "What up?". I didn't make notes but... Each car they tow to their Northside lot is held for 3 days before a letter goes out to the owner of record: Pick up your vehicle and you owe us $145(or $185??). No answer; no problem. They hold the vehicle 45(40?) days and you now owe $2200. They file that with the credit bureau(?) and turn the debt over to a collection agency. That agency goes after you and splits the proceeds, 50/50, with Wrecker Service. Disclaimer: All or part of this may be incorrect in one way, or another. Further: I am not sure, but I guess that the car is auctioned off after the holding period, and the proceeds go, first, toward the bill with Wrecker Service, and then to any other vested party. And that first money is probably not split with anybody. Ideal outcome: 100 good credit records/100-200 thousand dollars, in round numbers. Get the picture? Keith Reitman NearNorth REMINDERS: 1.
