Responding to Gregg Abbot and David Brauer:WM: Laux was no particular prize, in my estimation, but compared to Charlie Stenvig (tales are rife) Laux was a pussy-cat. Lubinski is an entirely different breed of cat. She has a talent for management, respect of other cops, respect of most of the community. Certainly my dealings with her as Inspector of 3rd precinct were always positive. She really turned that place around.
Laux led the department through one of it's worst periods in terms of police community relations. We're headed for a repeat of the late 80's/early 90's if an MPD insider is given the job.
I don't know much about Lucy Gerald, but in my cabWM: Lucy is good, but Lucy doesn't have ten+ years of experience in the streets and that lack of experience will be telling in a chief.
driver days I had my conflicts with Sharon Lubinski
and I'm NOT excited about her as the choice. didn't seem to be interested in community input from
'regular folks' particularly the cab drivers, and I
fear her approach to Minneapolis residents would be
similar.
In my experience Lubinski has been very careful to listen to residents and to actually hear what they are saying and consider how to meet the needs expressed.
WM: We are in a considerable hum if there is only one solution. Luckily, that is seldom the case and is particularly not the case in this instance. There is really only one alternative, one solution to changing the culture of the MPD and that is the use of a democratically elected board which would oversee police policy (as in Milwaukee) or a democratically elected police chief, similar to the county sheriff.
Mr. Nolley, you have taken a truly broad brush to the members of the police department, lumping them all together as though there were not a dime's worth of difference among them under any circumstances you appear to be able to imagine.
The advantage of either Lucy or Sharon is that they are women and, as such, have had an entirely different experience as police officers than men do. That experience gives them a different viewpoint from any of the other candidates which could work to our advantage as residents.
My biggest fear is that RT, a man in love with the media who looks at everything as a media man, will choose a chief who gives good quote, rather than someone who gives good leadership and management.
