Dear List Members,WM: I cannot fully express how sad this makes me feel. We have participated in the Home Host program just because there are so many youngsters homeless. Other than the usual struggles one goes through when put in a position to act in loco parentis to a teenager (you know--clean your room, it's your turn to do dishes, yadda-yadda), it has been a great experience for my household. Though our teen is now an adult, she has opted to stay with us. We think we may be able to take another teen this coming year.
For clarification: Hennepin County has not reduced funds that support family and adult shelters in Minneapolis. State cuts did unfortunately force us to reduce shelter funds for homeless teens, but we continue to work with youth agencies to improve access and services for unaccompanied youth.
Teens are at so great a risk when homeless; some either do not survive, or survive almost as golem,
shadows, hooked on drugs, eating by working in prostitution, and on and on. It is terrible to see that, just terrible.
