Also, Ms. Young and Ms. Marks have yet to inform this forum what Lubinski

WM: I cannot say much of anything about Lucy. I've been in the room with Lubinski and bunches of other folks of every stripe. I've been in the streets where Lubinski was doing cop stuff. She's calm, collected, and equally respectful of all when I've observed her.

This is what I know about the fracas in Seattle and it's relationship to what happened in Mpls. when the ISAG convention was downtown. MPD got their information from Seattle PD. In my opinion, that "information" was fairly tainted. I got a swamping of e-mails from Seattle, from doctors, passers-by, and office staff in the area of the melee who told an entirely different story than Seattle PD told. From what I gathered, Seattle's information to MPD was tainted by Seattle's less than sterling performance at an event in Seattle. So, when other ISAG guys gathered here, the MPD was using Seattle info to plan and execute their interaction with protesters. It appears to me that MPD was too credulous of Seattle PD, resulting in mistakes made here in Mpls.

And one wonders how they would respond to
Rosalind Nelson's post this morning in regard to Lubinski's mismanagement
of the ISAG protests. Not only was the ISAG fiasco fiscally unsound, but
it leaves me with the distinct impression that Officer Lubinski has as
little regard for dissent and free speech as she does for citizens with
darker skin.

WM: This is another leap of logic. Lubinski was a lieutenant at the time if I remember correctly. It was not she who made those decisions. She was out in the street with the uniforms. It's also a mighty big stretch to accuse her of disregard for dissent and free speech or citizens with darker colors.

To be fair, if McManus is a supporter of the Patriot Act and using local
law enforcement resources to uphold it, then I'll rescind my support for
his appointment, regardless of the support he has among racial
minorities.

WM: But in the end, we still got another straight, white male. Ho and then hum. I'm not impressed. This guy does not necessarily ever think outside his privilege. There appears to be no reason for him to do so, since his privilege has stood him in good stead, advanced his career, etc. No matter how you slice it, we're getting a pig in a poke (no disrespect to officers intended). We have no idea whether he will prove out, whether he will move in a year or two. We know virtually nothing about him

As for Wizard's post yesterday regarding Hard Times Cafe, I must say that
it was filled with serious misrepresentations against the restaurant, its
staff and its owners. (I've been a regular customer there for thirteen
years now, and have never observed any illegal drug dealing on the
premises.) Even Doug Grow wrote a column about the controversy, citing
that the police had to work very long (at least two weeks) and very hard
before they were able to entrap a customer on a drug charge that involved
the sale of a very small amount of marijuana. And I wonder if Wizard's
favorite office holders--past and present--care how much cocaine gets
sold in our more upscale restaurants? Lots of people I know have
speculated that SSB, Cherryhomes and Campbell wanted Hard Times shut
down to make way for a developer. Thank goodness that the folks at Hard
Times were resilient, otherwise we might've been stuck with another Chino
Latino, Olive Gardens or Hard Rock Cafe.

WM: You are citing me as misrepresenting the issues and bad mouthing the cafe. I did not. I said that if you knew what you were looking at you could weasel your way into obtaining illegal drugs from those holding office hours at the Hard Times. I did not say drugs were sold on the premises, I said you could get drugs through that place of contact. From what I gathered from the papers, someone, (and just who that someone is is still a mystery to me) made the leap into believing that the drugs were sold in the cafe and that the owners and staff of the cafe were "allowing" it to happen. You made the same leap. Speculating (your word not mine) that SSB, Cherryhomes, and Campbell wanted it closed doesn't cut much ice with me. Speculation and a buck eighty-three will get you coffee in some places. I will suggest, however, that if it was SSB, Cherryhomes, and Campbell who were determined to close that cafe, they did so after calls from neighbors around the cafe.

I actually have no favorite office holders, with the exception of my friends who happen to be or have been office holders. They are only required, in my estimation, to be forthright, honest, smart, and hard working. They should also solicit opinions from their constituents before wasting a lot of time producing something that is universally hated. It would be nice if we agreed on everything, but that's pie in the sky. I accept the fact that they won't always be right and that they will made mistakes. I also accept the fact that when they make mistakes, they will be doozies. And they will make mistakes.

Again, Ms. Marks, I'm willing to reconsider my position on just about any
issue, but it takes more than misrepresentations and several paragraphs
of non sequiturs to make me change my mind.

WM: I think, Mr. Schmitz, you're over the line. First, I was not attempting to change your position, but to present my own. Secondly, you misread my post quite thoroughly, so you've accused me of positions I did not take, you've scurrilously accused Gerold and Lubinski of attitudes you do not know that they hold and behaviors you do not know whether or not they have displayed. And excuse the hell out of me for putting in a non-sequitor, though I have checked and haven't found one in that post.
