Though I have not been on the list for some time, I felt
compelled to post information about a new Project 504
campaign around lead-based paint.

Information is already available at www.nomorelead.org.
About 250 Minneapolis landlords will soon have additional
information in their mailboxes in the coming few days, with
750 additional property owners notified about the campaign
in the next few months. This first group of 256 property
owners owns or controls some 1,561 Minneapolis properties,
representing 4,528 units in the city.

On the web site, tenants, property owners, parents and
others can learn more about the campaign, about lead-based
paint and childhood lead poisoning, and can download forms,
standard leases (with required lead-based paint disclosure
language) and other useful information.

Importantly, Hennepin County now has (or soon will have) $2
to $3 million in federal funds, to be used primarily for
lead hazard reduction efforts, with most of its focus in
Minneapolis. Property owners, who own properties built
prior to 1950 and who are interested in enrolling and
possibly obtaining a significant subsidy to replace old
windows and complete 'interim controls,' should e-mail me or
sign up at the web site to receive more information once
funds come on line.

I hope this proves to be a valuable resource to the
community, and the web site and its content will grow to
include an environmental justice effort focused on the Near
North community (though calling attention to how the public
found $141+ million to abate sound in South Minneapolis, at
no cost to the primarily white and relatively more affluent
property owner). More details about that, however, in the
near future.

My best on the holiday season,

Gregory Luce/Project 504
