Carol Becker: And as for the debate about identity politics, I will say
that women think differently, manage differently, and relate
differently. These are scientific facts. In the movie 28 Days, there is
a quote, "The definition of insanity is repeating the same behavior over
and over again expecting different results." As a woman, part of a
group that is over half of the population, I would like the City to
really think outside of the box and give a woman a spin, something that
would really be different. Something that hasn't happened here before.
Peter Schmitz: If what you say is really true, then Sharon Sayles
Belton, Jackie Cherryhomes and Joan Campbell, the quintessential
network-with-the-good-'ol-boys, inside-the-box-thinkers, whose approach
to public service was turning a blind eye to police brutality and giving
away over a hundred million dollars of city revenue to big-box businesses
and developers, are men in drag. I must admit, the three of them at
least had the public totally fooled on one count.
And let's not forget Jeanne Kirkpatrick, Elizabeth Dole, Madeline
Albright, Margaret Thatcher and every lame democrat's favorite: Hilary
Rodham Clinton (who enthusiastically supports the war against Iraq and
casts 60% of her Senate votes in line with G.W. Bush.) Again, they must
be drag queens, cause they certainly don't, to use your exact words,
"think differently, manage differently, and relate differently".
Current local "think-inside-the-box men in drag": Council member Barb
Johnson, who claims our police force isn't in need of much reform;
council member Lisa Goodman, who seems to have a fetish for downtown
TARGET-installed surveillance cameras and consistently thinks in the
same box with her pals Barrett Lane and Scott Benson; and last but not
least, Tim Pawlenty's buddy PAT! (As they say on Saturday Night Live, Is
she a woman or a man?). As state auditor, she (he?) has really served
Minneapolis so well this past year.
All this is not to say that men make better public servants than women.
In fact, I supported Becky Lourey for governor, and Lisa McDonald for
mayor.
Thinking outside the box, Ms. Becker, has more to do with courage and
compassion than the sex organs one was born with.
