I forgot to mention, that if you want information related to mental health
issues and homelessness, you might want to read works by the psychologist Paul
Toro who does an excellent job desribing the lack of attention to individuals
struggling with trauma, depression, addiction, mental health issues that are
experiencing homelessness.
Dr. Toro, does not blame them for the situation and, as a matter of
fact, he talks about the "chicken and egg effect" as to what came first: truama,
addiction mental health issues or homelessness that may have precipiated (or
excaberated) these issues.
A warning though. He also talks about the main problem being this
country's lack of commitment to decent housing for all of its people.
There are other psychologists who also speak about the class bias
directed against individuals who are experiencing homlessness- bias directed at them
by the "helping professionals" to whom they go for treatment.
So, there are muliple resources and ways to take action put forth by many
different people and organizations from many different disciplines.
Paul Toro's work can be found in journal form by at Abbot Northwestern
Library. The U of M should also have it as well.
