As I thought of the best way to let the Star Tribune know that their morning Editorial regarding the Park Board and President Fine's flapping leadership includes five inaccurate statements in that Editorial. Not to let Mr. Fine off the hook but to let folks know there are other culprits in the staged play that occurred on the night of December 17th.
#1: Line 5... "Fine nominated Jon Gurban for superintendent"... no, Walter Dziedzic nominated Gurban.
#2: 4th paragraph begins with "Fine moved to give Gurban a one-year contract" ... no, Carol Kummer made that motion.
[In most organizations the Chair/or President cannot make motions or participate actively in the discussion. If they must they stand aside and let the Vice-chair facilitate the meeting. He did not make these motions but he was a part of knowing that they were going to happen]
#3: 6th paragraph states..."Apparently, neither finalist wanted to work for such a fractious crowd". That was never stated by either candidate. Our Colorado candidate was begged by his Board to stay and lead that National organization forward with changes that Mr. Robinson had made in improving that organization and its status. VonderLInde claims it was for family reasons. I like to take people at their word.
#4: At the end of paragraph 7 a sentence states "The job is his, for as long as he can keep at least five votes on his side."...while this statement is true - from the public we have heard folks screaming for change, change in leadership, change in style, change in the way the Park Board does business. Would any of those changes impact Mr. Gurban's job?
and #5: 2nd to last paragraph of Editorial speaks to financial constraints being suffered and goes on to state..." Despite that reality, a new headquarters is being constructed, raising eyebrows".... we are not constructing a building - we remodeled a building. We own our building and no longer pay rent - a long term reality about saving money in the long run".

I could have written Lou Gelfand or a letter to the Editorial Board. But since hardly anyone reads corrections in the paper I thought this the best way to let some people know the facts. You may also read the "fluffy" Park Board press release that appears on the Parks website www.minneapolisparks.org which gives you at least an accurate report of who made motions.

However, there is still one glaring mistake in all of this - the word which has now appeared as written in gold - INTERIM. Believe me that was never in the words tossed about in that Dec.17th fiasco and can only be assumed because of the agreement to a one-year contract. The translation is in the mind of the beholder.

We are notdone with the issues regarding what's best for the Park Board but I plan on this being my last message (I think) before the sacred Christian holiday of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day come upon us.

I hope all of you are enjoying whatever celebration you choose at this time of year and that as the New Year arrives we all pray for change and a change in many places throughout Minneapolis that will help us maintain and keep our marvelous quality of life here in our beautiful city.

Get out there, ice skate and enjoy the parks - the benefits are endless and priceless.

citywide Park Commissioner
