I do know that the Mayor also invited various segments of the Minneapolis community to meet with McManus. I was invited by CM Zimmerman to meet with McManus and a group of LGBT community leaders from OutFront MN weekend before last. Unfortunately, I was in New Mexico for a meeting that weekend, and I couldn't attend. I would be interested in hearing from community folks that have had a chance to meet with McManus. What are your impressions? How was he when you met with him? If you were there with a specific community, what was his response/interaction with members of your community?

Subject: [Mpls] Will respect the Kaplan's privacy and I support McManus for police chief
Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2003 01:00:24 EST

Thanks to all who gave me feedback.
I will not be knocking on their door tomorrow. Will be out there on the
park land.
---on another note:
From everything I have heard, Mayor Rybak followed a very ethical
procedure in his effort to select the next police chief. He went to community people
for feedback, the communities often most impacted by police abuse are largely
supportive of Mc Manus.
I am not sure what more the Mayor could have done. I am heartened that
McManus was quoted as talking about the need to respect all of our city's
people. Makes me think there is a chance for dialogue about treatment of persons
experiencing homelessness.
I have e-mailed my city council person Robert Lilligren encouraging him to
vote yes for McManus as chief.
Hiring for any job is difficult. You never know until the person is doing
the job. And, if there are problems then, they need to be addressed. But I see
no basis to accuse the Mayor of doing this process wrong.
