OK - the arguments opposing McManus are starting to get silly. The guy gets questioned on what methods he's employed elsewhere to fight crime and it turns out he's been doing things that we do here that have been successful. And he gets ripped for that?
I think the main point that's being missed is that the situation here with McManus is not the same as when Olson came on and our city's nickname was "Murderapolis" As was noted by Kent, crime has been declining for several years now. With the exception of a few hot spots, I haven't seen anybody complain that things are out of control. So if McManus employs similar crime fighting methods to what's worked under Olson, I should think that would be a GOOD thing. Olson is not heading out because he was weak on fighting crime. He's heading out because his community relations skills are nonexistent and he hasn't been able to deal with brutality issues to the satisfaction of the community. McManus apparently has similar crime fighting skills to Olson and going by his track record, he's way better on community relations and has a history of taking police brutality seriously and not tolerating it. In other words, he's an improvement. As for the point about the best way to maintain an organization's culture is to promote from within, that's certainly true. And that's just the point. Those of us who like McManus DON'T want to maintain the MPD's current culture. The fact the he employs similar crime fighting techniques as what the MPD is already using should mean that the MPD should be able to continue their good work on fighting crime while hopefully addressing the issues that have raised the ire of the community.
