The snip below shows that the politicians and the teams know that the taxpayers on not
to fond of taxpayer supported stadiums. Makes me wonder what will go on behind closed
doors to keep the electorate from stopping our politicians from tossing our money at
bad ideas. Might this be another Gavidae? Block E? Downtown Target? And then we get
stuck with a useless dome no one wants.

As for a metrowide sales tax, that would require legislative approval and the
governor's signature.

McElroy said the governor hasn't said he's opposed to local units of government
raising their own taxes. McElroy said he hadn't discussed a metrowide sales tax notion
with the governor, but such a proposal, if it had any possibility, would probably have
to be attached to a referendum in all seven counties.

This triggered more pointed discussions about referendums, which political leaders in
Hennepin County, St. Paul and Anoka County oppose, saying elected officials should
make such decisions. The sports teams aren't fond of taking this to voters, either.

Peilen, speaking against a referendum, said: "The risk is that you have one and it
fails, and you are absolutely back to where you started."

Said McElroy: "It's sort of democracy, isn't it?"

Countered Peilen: "So is representative democracy."

That was the tenor of Wednesday's episode of "How The Stadium Debate Turns."

They'll be back at it again Monday.
