Mark says: I am all for having an IB program as an option for students; I would opposed to anyone suggesting that it be the "main course" for all students.
I say: Mark, I couldn't agree with you more. My first reaction to the idea of IB was guarded. But, the more I looked at it, the more I realized it may help Whittier attract students from the neighborhood that we are currently missing out on. It may help us climb out of our situation of being pigeon-holed to a destiny of low expectations by 807 Broadway and the School Board. The new principal at Whittier is energetic and willing to go the extra mile to implement whatever program necessary to help increase the test scores of kids and to attract a healthy cross section of children to the school. Not just the ones with educational challenges. I do not think for one minute that the IB program is appropriate for every child. I also don't think the music and arts program at Whittier is for every child. In addition, I don't think Whittier should tolerate low test scores and being treated like the revolving door school by the district because of the crazy way they draw the school boundaries. I really like the idea of offering a cross section of educational opportunities at Whittier so we can meet the needs of a larger group of parents in the neighborhood. It has become very clear the district is not going to work with us. I am very interested in hearing more information about other programs that might help Whittier kids climb higher on the educational ladder.
