EDITORIAL Robert Lilligren must go By: Titilayo Badiako Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder Originally posted 1/28/2004
On Friday, January 16, with a 9-4 vote, William McManus was confirmed as the new police chief of Minneapolis no thanks to Eighth Ward City Council Member Robert Lilligren. Lilligren must go! He seemed to forget that he is not a council member from his own initiative, but from the citizens of the Eighth Ward, who mostly voted for him by default because Brian Herron was no longer available. Being a council member means being a voice for the communities that you serve. Lilligren seemed to forget that he was supposed to be serving his constituency when he was bombarded with calls from citizens who wanted him to vote for McManus; he refused to take or return our calls. When the mayor had a gathering at Sabathani, in Lilligrens ward, for the community to meet William McManus, Lilligren refused to attend. When my son was brutally beaten by the police for no other reason than he was a Black youth on the wrong side of town, there was no call of sympathy or support from our Council Member Lilligren, and no work behind the scenes to make sure that this kind of atrocity did not happen to another person who lived in his ward; Robert Lilligrens voice was mute. http://www.spokesman-recorder.com/News/Article/Article.asp?NewsID=37866&sID=16 Posted By Shawn Lewis, Field Neighborhood -- ___________________________________________________________ Sign-up for Ads Free at Mail.com http://promo.mail.com/adsfreejump.htm REMINDERS: 1.
