Doug Mann makes lots of good points in his recent post, but one thing we ought not forget is that the voters of MPLS gave the district extra funding through the referendum for lower class sizes, and while it is true that the state has reduced funding to the school district, that's not the voters problem. The voters voted to increase class sizes, not to increase or even maintain teacher pay.
The teachers need to get over it. As far as firing tenured teachers who cost more, it is a good idea only if they are crummy. We need to fire crummy teachers and keep good teachers with no regard to time served. If we worry about how long someone has worked for the district, we'll never get anything meaningful done. http://southhighsucks.com/flawedmplslayoffs.html has more info on what I mean. Finally, I want to mention in another topic that the bus drivers ought to get over themselves just like the teachers. Their union cannot expect more money, too...at least not until pro-spending politicians sweep an election.
