No need to guess or recall: the Minneapolis Public Schools has a web site
where you can find this stuff if you look (search function, keyword "bus.")

From: http://www.mpls.k12.mn.us/schools/school_guide/support_services.shtml

"The walk distance to high schools (grades 9-12) is two miles, one mile to
middle schools (grades 6-8). Each elementary school (grades High Five-5) has
a unique walk zone of one-half mile or less. Only High Five and kindergarten
students receive mid-day transportation."

By the way, 3 miles IS a hefty commuting hike. For example, it's the
distance from 40th & Nicollet to 11th & Hennepin (my hike when I'm being a
good boy). It takes me about 50 minutes - and I walk fast.

Now, true, anyone's health would benefit from such a jaunt. But I wouldn't
expect a kid to do it every day, both ways (remember 50 minutes is only one
way).

In any event, it takes far less time to try Google or the appropriate city
Web site to attempt to find the information you're looking for. No sense
debating false premises if the info is easily available.
