The labor movement and its supporters need to do
some serious thinking about what will happen if
Pawlenty wins the bus strike.
A long transit strike, by itself, doesn't
accomplish anything. It hurts poor people. It hurts
the inner cities. Pawlenty and the Republicans in
power forced the bus strike. They think we will fight
among ourselves instead of uniting.
A transit strike causes problems in districts
represented by Democrats. It doesn't cause many
problems in districts represented by Republicans.
What if Democrats protested the Florida recount by
having a national hunger strike? What if union members
and Democrats threw $20 bills in bonfires?
A long transit strike is NOT a winning strategy.
Soon a choice will have to be made between
escalation and surrender.
Escalation would mean sympathy strikes, wildcats,
disruption of traffic, maybe even a general strike.
Most of this would be illegal.
