What will happen if Pawlenty wins the bus strike? What if low-income people get hurt for nothing?
What will happen if Labor and the left/liberal/progressive/DFL community can't protect the interests of low-income people? Here is another good column by Doug Grow: http://www.startribune.com/stories/373/4666053.html What would the labor leaders of the 1930's do? The Twin Cities used be an anti-union stronghold. There was a powerful anti-union group called the Citizens Alliance that kept unions out from 1919 until 1934. The Citizens Alliance pressured businesses to toe the anti-union line and they had a private militia for thuggery. The operated sort of like the White Citizens Councils did in the South during the 1950's and 60's. In 1934 the Teamsters and other unions finally defeated the Citizens Alliance. It took a massive strike, street battles, and a lot of support from pro-union people. Many books have been written about the 1934 Minneapolis Teamster strike. Here is something to think about for St. Patrick's day: What would Michael Collins do? Here is something to do: TRANSIT STRIKE RALLY THURSDAY MARCH 18 2 PM STATE CAPITOL, South Entrance It would be a good idea to put up posters and leaflet all the neighborhoods within walking distance of the Capitol. How are people without cars going to get to the rally? Do you think ride-matching services will help people get to the rally? Probably not, but give them a try. Any nonprofit that is willing to participate in Pawlenty's publicity stunt should be bombarded with requests for rides to the rally. Are there any organization that are willing to coordinate ride-matching for the rally? Neighborhood groups and District Councils in St. Paul should be involved in ride-matching for the rally. Maybe elected officials could help in ride-matching. If you can give people a ride to rally, maybe you could leaflet and put up posters in your immediate neighborhood offering to give rides.
