Snipped from todays Strib: Bike riders hoping to take advantage of clear sailing on Nicollet Mall while buses remain off the streets will ask the Minneapolis City Council today to remove the daytime ban on bikes using the mall.. <then>
Police have continued to ticket riders on the mall during the strike, but having the prime city pathway sit empty seems ludicrous, said Council Member Lisa Goodman, who offered the pro-bike proposal at the request of cycling constituents. http://www.startribune.com/stories/373/4672848.html [TB] Clearly CM Goodman is a bit sharper than who ever is running the Police Department these days. Hopefully the return of bikes to the mall is permanent. You know work at the Police Department is getting slow when they spend a March day tagging bike riders for a stroll up the mall, somebody down there needs to wake up and ask just what their priorities are. And whatever happened to the proposal a while back to ban city vehicles from the mall except for emergencies? I want to see the first person who tags an unmarked police car for a trip down the mall. Call 4,5,9 and 11; lets see the Perp Walk. Given that both sides in the transit strike seem to be entrenched in their positions, it looks like well have a bus free pedestrian mall all summer.
