Volunteers Needed for Rooftop Garden Installation Beginning Saturday, April 24, 2004, The Green Institute will install a rooftop garden on the Phillips Eco-Enterprise Center. This will be the region's first green rooftop to be installed for its energy efficiency and stormwater management benefits. This green rooftop will be an important model as green rooftops are considered for the Minneapolis Central Library, Midtown Exchange (formerly Sears), the former Pillsbury "A" Mill, and other new development projects. The Green Institute's green rooftop will be visible at very close range to thousands of LRT passengers daily as the Hiawatha Line rises over Lake Street. Green rooftops have a wide variety of benefits, including: * Doubling the lifespan of a building's roof membrane * Reducing heating and cooling demands * Managing stormwater * Improving air quality * Reducing the Urban Heat Island * Adding attractive green space to urban areas We will rely on volunteers to assist with the installation. Installation events are being planned for Saturdays on April 24, May 8, May 15, (May 22 will be reserved for a rain day) and June 12. We feel that our volunteer installation events will be a unique opportunity for community members as well as industry professional to become familiar with green rooftop technology as green rooftops gain prominence in the Twin Cities. Volunteers who enter the rooftop area must be 18 years of age. No other previous experience is required.
