From the mn-logcabin list:

Good news folks! The Minneapolis City Council voted
unanimously today to oppose both the federal and state
constitutional amendments that would ban gay marriage.

Thanks,

Does this mean the City of Minneapolis will start lobbying against this amendment at the legislature?

I know that Peter McLaughlin was interested in such a resolution at the County level - at least that was according to Mark Stenglein. I'd like to thank Peter McLaughlin for trying to push this - and I encourage him to continue pushing this. I encourage this resolution to go forward at the Hennepin County level. I would much rather see the county work on this - than do what my County Commissioner Mark Stenglein is trying to do - which is to saddle Hennepin County Taxpayers with a 1/2 to 1 percent sales tax to pay for a stadium - and not give us a vote on this nonsense to add insult to injury. Even though two people talked to Stenglein at the Republican District Convention - urging him to work on a resolution in Hennepin County opposed to the anti-gay state constitutional amendment - Stenglein said he didn't want to do that. I was one of the persons who talked to Stenglein - and asked him if he really wanted to be on the side of the people who carried the "Death Penalty for Homosexuals" signs at the MFC, Bachmann and Republican Party of Minnesota promoted rally.

I read an article recently in the Washington Post weekly that talked about Minneapolis being a brain gain city. Part of the reason for that was Minneapolis's reputation for a large gay community. The recent Ohio Super DOMA legislation caused some larger companies to decide to locate somewhere else besides Ohio. This amendment - if passed and voted on by the public could end up prohibiting private businesses from offering Domestic Partner benefits. Afterall - that is part of the Legal Instances thereof of marriage. And it would give the Minnesota Family Council a way to try to force this issue with private businesses through lawsuits. Lawsuits always cost businesses - whether they win or lose in court.

Long term: Minneapolis will not be a "Cold Omaha" without the twins. Minneapolis has a well deserved reputation for great theater (and that's not just the Guthrie) and is an incubator for actors who often end up in New York or Hollywood on TV or in the Movies.
