Dyna questions my integrity in discussing lrt. She undoubtedly has
much evidence, namely her fertile imagination and a rail fan's dreams.
"First off, in the interest of full disclosure Mr. Gaarder should make
us aware of the cause of his great interest in light rail,
which seems to be the only thing he posts on. Seldom do people have such a
single minded attention to a subject unless they have some professional or
economic interest therein."
I have no professional or economic interest in lrt. I work as a computer
programmer in the health care field.
I am trying to point out how much transit has and will suffer because of
building lrt and how much more could be done for transit riders if rail
fans would stop redefining transit as only rail.
Therefore, I have the same economic interest as any other taxpayer, preventing
government waste of my tax dollars.
Hiawatha lrt ("high potential") is forecast by its backers to carry only 5%
more passengers per day in its first year of full service than the
slightly shorter 21 bus route along Selby/Lake did two years ago whil
costing at least 62% more than it would cost to double the number of buses
operated by Metro Transit.
After 20 years of predicted major population growth, its ridership is
predicted to grow only 25%, about 1% per year.
