I just got done reading the meeting minutes from last night (short meetings help the situation) and want to make three corrections and one additional comment. I can't believe Chris is doing this every week - I love it!

They are:

This report below was from Duluth and Lake Superior had to do with Water Quality issues and a report that was addressing the possibility of wildlife and other types of creatures (like geese) may be creating the E-Coli rather than the automatic link to human feces. The report was part of a growing concern about out newest immigrant population in Minneapolis - the geese
* Beach Closures on Lake Superior in 2003

Assistant Superintendent Schmidt gave a presentation about the beach closures due to high levels of e-coli and a single scientific study made of the problem. Schmidt appeared to be saying in so many words that they did not know what caused the e-coli levels and that the evidence was not conclusive in proving that a specific animal was to blame. [I'm not sure what the point was as I missed the first couple of minutes.
Maybe Liz can clarify.]

and later in the meeting...

Actually I was clarifying that in my conversation with Commissioner Erwin about "my wants for the year" was aboaut solar projects and panels on our park centers (such as Matthes -which the Seward neighborhood has been trying to get up for over two years). and that I waant sola wherever possible just not the lighting issues in the dog parks.
* Solar lighting. Young wants board to look at solar lighting opportunities.

{Just a die note: to above discussion item] * Dziedzic interjects asking if Erwin only asked "his four" and not all commissioners for their goals this year. Erwin answers he asked all commissioners but that some had responded and others had not. [there was an earlier statement made by Erwin at some point about these goals but I don't have where that was in my notes.]
I just want to give credit to the others...
* Young brings to discussion the nomination of the name John Sarna for the golf learning center. She says that Sarna, along with 2 others (Rice and Kroenig), really changed things along the river front, and brought the Stone Arch Bridge into public ownership and use. He should be recognized and memorialized for bringing things to fruition at the water front by naming something associated with it after him. Young proposes naming the former Riverview supper club property the John Sarna Park Plaza, instead of the golf learning center, which is quite removed from the river, is just a small ordinary building and maybe Sarna doesn't even golf. She suggested visioning out 25 years and imagine driving north on the James I Rice River Road up to the Carl Kroenig Interpretative Center and you stop by the John Sarna Park Plaza for an ice cream cone at the propose smal amphitheater and entertainment gathering place. I continied to point out the significance these 3 made for "bringing home the bacon" in order to get the riverfront cleanup, develop the new Mill ruins Park and more.Young wants to keep Dziedzic's previous meeting motion on the Sarna name tabled so that this new idea can be discussed.

Olson says the idea is "brilliant."

Thanks again Chris, Annie Young citywide Park Commissioner
