The Minnesota Compact presents A Forum on Civility in Politics Thursday, May 13th, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. The Humphrey Forum, Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs Minneapolis, MN
with Vicki Gowler, editor of the Pioneer Press Anders Gyllenhaal, editor of the Star Tribune Mitch Pearlstein, President, Center of the American Experiment Tim Penny, Senior Fellow at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs The inspiration for this forum comes from a symposium published in the winter issue of the American Experiment Quarterly entitled, “They Beat the Hell Out of Each Other Up There”: Civility in Minnesota (and National) Politics. As we conclude the 2004 legislative session and move into the campaign season, what better time than now to continue the discussion about the state of political civility in Minnesota. The afternoon forum will also provide an opportunity to talk about the Minnesota Compact, a project that has played a role in Minnesota politics in the past and which is being renewed in the current election cycle. The Minnesota Compact, which originated in 1996 and continued in 1998 and 2000 under the leadership of the League of Women Voters of Minnesota, is well known for its efforts to raise the level of political discussion in four areas: candidate debates, campaign advertising, media coverage and citizen participation. One of the strengths of past Minnesota Compact efforts has been the coalition of organizations and individuals working together to improve elections in Minnesota. Many of these partners are again meeting to discuss plans for the 2004 Minnesota Compact including, Minnesota E-Democracy, the Minnesota Broadcasters Association, the Citizens League of Minnesota, the Minnesota Newspaper Association, the Minnesota News Council, the Humphrey Institute’s Center for the Study of Politics, and others. Reservations are required. To make a reservation, please call the League of Women Voters of Minnesota at 651-224-5445 or email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks, Ady Wickstrom Shoreview - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ady Wickstrom office: (651) 224-5445 LWVMN Webmaster home: (651) 780-5245 email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] / [EMAIL PROTECTED] website: www.lwvmn.org REMINDERS: 1.
