Minneapolis Council member a fighter

BY GITA SITARAMIAH

Pioneer Press

Natalie Johnson Lee has become one of the most provocative
members of the Minneapolis City Council since she shocked
the city's establishment by unseating the council's
powerful former president in 2001.

In recent weeks, Johnson Lee has been freely shooting
barbs at Mayor R.T. Rybak. She was one of two members
who didn't attend his state of the city address last month.
And she boycotted a city executive committee meeting
earlier this month to stall the selection of the
Civil Rights Department director candidate nominated
by the mayor.

Johnson Lee, a married mother of four who came to the
Twin Cities 12 years ago from Philadelphia, is the only
woman of color on the council and believes her outspoken
approach is necessary to make gains for minorities
and other disenfranchised groups.
