I sincerely think this is a conundrum that has everyone baffled. The only real solution in the short term would be a form of martial law......but what then........people seem to think that it's purely economics, that if offered a job and good pay people would walk away from the gang, we know that the culture of gangs is really behind this......if you look at any developmental conception gangs fall into the mythic-membership category( pathologically as they are).....whereas most of us are at the next level rational, so any solution would yes, involve economics but also trying to get these young men into another gang of sorts, a more rational gang (less pathological ) one that doesn't destroy it's neighborhood. But also move them out of the purely mythic role that surround gangs, fostered by the music, the lifestyle, and that, I'm sorry to say takes time, which some do not feel they have. Not only do we need leadership on the outside, but on the inside to transform gangs into something positive, give up the guns and the drugs, and get the kind of peer pressure that will actually have an effect on this particular mindset. Different level, different solution and way of implementation.....basically, they will have to be fearless, wise, and radiate a light that dissolves the darkness that Jordan has hanging over it. This is an opportunity, not a problem.....these neighborhoods exist throughout the entire world, and if we can transform this neighborhood, the energy can spread to other places too. But the same old "solutions" will not solve this alone, you really need someone on the level of Gandhi to bring this around. Seriously, because it has only gotten worse, even if the statistics say otherwise. Both MLK and Gandhi knew that only light will dissolve the darkness, not more darkness. However, Jordan and colonial India are not the same. If the police try to impose peace, it will be a lie. But the ground must be fertile for gardening, whatever that form will take, we'll know when we see it. What all of us can do is send good vibes to them and hope, pray and visualize for a miracle, North Mpls is due for a couple. I take this slant because MLK got his thing from Gandhi, but Gandhi got his thing from the Bhagavad Gita.....maybe something to think about.

Robert Yorga
St. Anthony West

"My true being is unborn and changeless. I am the Lord who dwells in every creature. Through the power of my own maya, I manifest in a finite form. Whenever Dharma (law) declines and the purpose of life is forgotten, I manifest myself on Earth. I am born in every age to protect the good, to destroy the evil, and to reestablish dharma."

Krishna - Bhagavad Gita
