What happened to my rock and roll, whatever happened to Mpls?
Out and about I look around and Mpls has changed. I mean really changed. St. Paul for that matter..... but that's another list. For better and for worse. Getting away from issues and such, which this list is for, taking a big picture look at it, condos going up, highway 55 firmly in place, Steve out of forced attitude.....I wonder what it will look like in even 3 years. We really are on a cusp, again, like back in the early sixties...when buildings came down one after another, admittedly, some were falling down, but some were just in the way. This post is dedicated to all of those who were just in the way.
Progress. When I got to work today in St. Paul all the trees that have been there for years and years were down just laying there and will be taken away and forgotten. And condos will be there by the end of the summer.........I'm not saying all of this "progress" is bad..... but I wonder if the place I knew, the place I was born in will feel anything like it did back in my late teens......I can easily see First Avenue torn down after all the decimation I've seen in the past ten years and replaced by something so so so.......otherworldly......condos......I mean are people really moving into these things or what?
Back at the encampment...as we called it....highway 55......
I wonder what is the definition of "progress" to the left it means maybe more inclusive, more enlightened, more peaceful, and to everybody else, well, you can't fight the system. Again, apparently "they" want to develop the B.F. Nelson site here in NE Mpls that is adjacent to boom Island and I wonder who will win? But like Jason said, why is it always about winning? The advertisers and developers by nature will do what they do, but we don't have to buy into their pipe dreams but it doesn't have to be so dual......we can say, "we like this, but you can't do that". And that can be the end of story. With Faith..... Mpls can go forward having done the right thing.
Walmart apparently is making it's move on the midwest and I KNOW why 10, 000 people move..... maybe partly because at the end of this day, there won't be anything to call home.
On my way home I swung by the cathedral and thought how lucky I was to have had my graduation ceremony there. Maybe..... that will still be there at the end of my days and I can reminisce like the old codgers.....I remember when........it just kinda beats you down. I looked at those trees on the ground and I thought of highway 55..... camp two pines, the Minnehaha Free state and I felt grown up because I didn't have anything to say, I just kinda sighed and went about my business, getting bikes up and rolling and thinking of Fiver in Watership Down....development, blood, must get away, must leave tonite, must leave this place........
You know, speaking of camp two pines......as the days roll on, that will be one of those experiences that I wouldn't trade for all the gold in the world. The type of thing people pay thousands of money and go to California to experience, I had here in Mpls. You really don't know the magic you missed....I guess that's part of it, without the bullshit reroute, the whole beautiful, ugly thing would have never taken place, I suppose. Because it was REAL. It wasn't prepackaged, it didn't have a happy ending.........it was so REAL!!!!!!I wonder what is real in this town anymore if shit transpires and people sit on their behinds......change.....they will say, simply, it's change and change is good, but thoughtful conscious change is better. Ok, lets get back to the drab, rutted road of routine and give up to the weight of "progress". OR NOT!
Robert Yorga St. Anthony West
"When the green field comes off like a lid, revealing what was much better hid, Unpleasant;
And look! Behind, without a sound...the woods have come up and are standing round in deadly crescent. And the bolt is sliding in its groove, outside the window is the black remover's van, and now with sudden, swift emergence come the women in dark glasses, the hump-backed surgeons and the scissor-man."
W.H. Auden, the Witnesses
