Horrible news on the Channel 5 TV web site: Channel 5 Eyewitness News reports that the Star Tribune refused to publish one of the ads for this year's GLBT Pride Festival, because the ad showed two men kissing.
The newspaper says the ad did not meet its acceptability standards. Ben Taylor, the Star Tribune Senior Vice President of Communications talked to 5 Eyewitness News about the ad. "Our feeling was that this was an advertisement for an event, and two men kissing was clearly meant to be inflammatory. It was not in good taste in the context of what it was advertising," Taylor said. Jim Kelley, the President of GLBT Pride, told 5 Eyewitness News, "To say the image of two men kissing is inflammatory in the city of Minneapolis, where we have a non-discrimination policy for sexual orientation, is just appalling." Pride organizers say they found other ads with people kissing or in an embrace in the paper. The Star Tribune says it looks at each ad on an individual basis. The paper gave organizers a chance to submit a different ad, but they declined. -END- I have to say I'm shocked. This is absolutely terrible. People need to speak out.
