"I find these comments to be particularly discourteous and
insulting, but also in keeping with the values of many of my
neighbors. I've always wondered whether other neighborhoods
of Minneapolis are as...well...unconcerned with truth,
justice, and individual rights as the residents of Prospect Park.
"In a previous post Mr. Kahn criticized as superficial my comments
about the Minneapolis Public Schools. I suppose that this may
be simply the result of his lack of experience on the List.
My values and opinions about education go far beyond the convenience of my
own family and have been expressed here in detail for more than three years."
-Michael Atherton, lately of Prospect Park
I suppose I have little experience with this list relative to Mr.
Atherton's, but that is changing; still, outside my well marked satire, I manage to
avoid anything that could be considered ad hominem. Conversely, my experience
with Mr. Atherton and his "values and opinions about education" has led me to
discount them; since the litany of outright lies, lies of omission,
distortions, and convenient or disingenuous misinterpretations that mark his last post
on this topic are legion, I hesitate to answer them one by one for the reason
that I have stated previously and now state again: it is of little interest to
the list to know the minutia of every event and detail of my neighborhood.
Still, at the risk of censure for bordering on the ad hominem, I will
say that I believe Mr. Atherton's opinions of my neighborhood are unique to him
and the few kindrid spirits still involved in his first crusade against 'me
and my kind'; I will say that and also that Mr. Atherton appears thinner
skinned than even me. I could go through the last three years of his posts in the
archives to validate my opinion, but like many topics, I don't consider it worth
my time.
In conclusion, I believe that Mr. Atherton's notions of "truth, justice,
and individual rights" have been given way too much consideration in Prospect
Park since they appear different than most held in the neighborhood. The
consensus doesn't appear to be a tyranny of the majority, but, like so much of
life, is about limits. When I reach my own limits with a person, place, or thing;
it necessitates a willful ignorance of anything more to do with it, as
possible. Poof; gone. I highly recommend it as it works for me.
