SUBP gets new life By: Pauline Thomas Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder Originally posted 6/30/2004
In a bold movement at the last hour, Minneapolis City Council Member Natalie Johnson Lees leadership was able to extend the life of the Citys faltering Small Underutilized Business Program (SUB). The SUB program, as we have reported in the Spokesman-Recorder over the last two years, was set to end on June 25, 2004. The SUB program seeks to insure inclusion of women and persons of color in City contracting opportunities. Approximately two years ago, the Community Collaborative took public testimony from a large group of minority contractors who spoke of discrimination in the local contracting industry and the failure of the City of Minneapolis to rectify that discrimination. The Collaborative brought the issue to the City officials attention. We also asked them to address the upcoming expiration of the SUB program. To the Citys credit, and under the leadership of Council Member Johnson Lee, the Citys Health and Human Services Committee directed the Minneapolis Civil Rights Department to address all the issues we raised. Two years later, not only had the civil rights leadership not addressed these issues, but they had no plan in place to address the rapidly approaching expiration of the SUB law. http://www.spokesman-recorder.com/News/SubSection.asp?sID=16 Posted by Shawn Lewis, Field Neighborhood -- _______________________________________________ Talk More, Pay Less with Net2Phone Direct(R), up to 1500 minutes free! http://www.net2phone.com/cgi-bin/link.cgi?143 REMINDERS: 1.
