I tried to lure Pat Scott into this discussion...she is the leading advocate for Walker Library ... without success. Hopefully she or someone working with her will let us know more about her efforts to Save Walker Library!
Well... for a while it seemed that the Library Board was getting feisty and was actually refusing to surrender to the Dr. Otto Octavius' of loft developers...but they'll cave eventually, if they haven't already. (wish they wouldn't) Calhoun Square could be converted into a library that would rival any of of the perky fancy Socrates Cafe laden Hennepin County libraries... but it won't happen...the main central palace will devour any excess money floating around. The heirs of T.B. Walker could be appealed to...but I suppose they lost interest long ago in the little doric columned library their ancestor was so devoted to and are channeling any surplus millions to that ugly, heavy, off kilter mass of steel beems looming violently over Hennepin and Lyndale Aves..... The archives of the Southwest Journal has many articles about Walker Library including this... "The old Walker Library, built at 2901 Hennepin Ave. S. in 1911, stares vacantly at the new (circa 1981) library across the street. The original library was built on land donated by T.B. Walker, who tried to establish a free library system. It has a pillared front entrance, two entrances on the lower level (not including this gated lower-level pass-through) and a now-boarded up skylight that once made for breezy reading. But the building hasn't just served hungry minds -- it was once a restaurant called "The Library" and a used clothing store." And was most recently the Pagoda spa...a business that opened in December 2003 and failed just this month... It seems that every business that has occupied the original Walker Library building after it ceased to be a library has FAILED... So there appears to be a curse on Walker Library which condemns the new library to failure and demands that the original Walker Library can be no other entity BUT a library...so who uttered this curse...the angry spirit of the first Walker Library librarian?
