We we're lucky this 4th, the flammables were none to dry and the wind barely blew. None the less on the evening of the 4th more than a few garages, cars, etc.. managed to not so spontaniously combust. Worst hit was Jordan neighborhood, where firefighters ran from fire to fire while attacked by less than grateful gangbangers who probably set the fires. Meanwhile Hawthorne again involuntarily hosted the gangbanger's annual fireworks show just south of Lowry on 4th Street. Unlike the all too short official display down on the river, the fireworks were nonstop all evening except for a brief reprise while ambulance, fire, and police responded to a violent domestic incident. Smaller displays were numerous and all to obvious to be ignored by law enforcement all over the Northside. But when they're 200 officers short and have to send officers to patrol an event in the luxury loft neighborhood downtown, our police can't do much more than triage.

But the worst of the weekend came the next day, when yet another murder occurred within a few blocks of Lowry and Lyndale. This is a neighborhood all too familiar to the good folks from the Coroner's office, who must visit this 'hood all too frequently. Dig out a street map if you've got one handy, if not this is a simple grid system and easy to follow. This latest murder was in the 2900 block of 6th Street North. 5th Street got cut off at the bend by Bassett's Creek when they laid out the street grid parallel to the river, so 29th Avenue and 4th Street where another Minneapolitan was murdered over a kids bike last week is but a block east. Four blocks north and a block west is the flower shop where a clerk was murdered a couple weeks ago. And a few blocks east past the new school not one but two people were murdered on the corner of Washington and 33rd a short few months ago.

5 senseless murders within a few blocks, and thats just the tally so far this year... Is this not Murderapolis?

                hangin' on in Hawthorne,
