If gas becomes very expensive, it won't happen overnight. Hybrids and cars that use alternative fuels or even electric power will replace those that burn mostly gas (already partially ethanol here) as the price of gas goes up.
MNDOT and other DOTs are worried about hybrids cutting into the annual fuel tax revenues, although hybrids are currently a very small percentage of total sales. I'm not sure that the inflation-adjusted price of cars has gone up since Henry Ford started mass producing them. What was the price of the low-end cars in 1960? The low end now is about $10,000 or maybe less, I don't watch those prices. I do know that the current version of the car that I bought 10 years ago is about 20% higher, and it has features that would have increased the price by about 10% back then.
