Lisa Goodman and Scott Benson should be heralded for their encouraging all
of us to patronize those in cities where smoking bans have been invoked.
That includes many of the little bars where we've wanted to meet a pal or
stop in for a beer and a hamburger (I've already been for a Jucy Lucy and
look forward to many more in smoke-free surroundings).

Dean Zimmermann courageously proposed this ban to begin with, and he, too
wants us all to remember the little people at the little enterprises he's
afraid will suffer from this. I say: if they do, it will be short-lived, but
any exemptions would throw the entire matter into legal chaos, let alone
abandon the public/worker health initiative this is supposed to represent. I
hope and trust Dean - and all his colleagues - will stick to the sort of
ban Bloomington passed - no exceptions and a delay in implementation for
those small places needing some time to prepare. Parity for all cities and
towns will be critical.

When they all go nonsmoking, we crusaders will go a-bar-hopping to support
our home-grown businesses.

Thanks again to all the Councils and advocates for this important
initiative.
