I want to add to Peter and to Steve's observations
with a few of my own:

1.) I live in the current Third Ward which has been
through a real trauma concerning elections. If
"Representative" Kahn (I've explained why I put this
in quotes before) we will have had city elections in
2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005, all because
"Representative" Kahn doesn't like having Natalie
Johnson Lee as her council member. (I personally think
Natalie Johnson Lee is the best thing that's happened
to Minneapolis since Hubert Humphrey.)

To the Republicans who are hoping this might be
beneficial to them, I would point out that
"Representative" Kahn's tactics concerning
redistricting are exactly the same, and for the same
reasons as Tom Delay's shenanigans. It's arguable
that "Representative" Kahn is simply taking a page out
of the Republican play book.

2.) Nixon actually resigned for doing basically the
same thing, It seems like "Representative" Kahn is
following in the great tradition of Richard Nixon.
However I hope she doesn't resign, I want the
electorate to know who she is and the kind of hardball
she plays.

Finally, I would take the time to learn about Becki
Smith. She has been a neighborhood/community activist
for over a decade, has a very diverse and large number
of supporters, and more importantly, she LISTENS to
and RESPECTS her constituents, and their right to free
speech and freedom of expression...and more
importantly, their right to vote their conscience.

This is an impassioned plea to those of you in 59b
from some of us in the (current) Third Ward. We DO
NOT want four city elections in a four year time span.
We DO NOT want someone who does not live in this
district making our lives worse and deciding that she
knows best for us, no matter how many times we tell
her that we can make our OWN decisions.

Having gotten to know Becki Smith, I can attest the
she will be an effective legislator, and a thoughtful
listener. She will bring elegance ans sanity back to
the 59b legislative seat, and the best part is that
YOU will once again be able to have a say in how your
government works!

I can't vote for Becki Smith, but YOU (in 59b) can!
Please do!

Peter Schmitz: Good post, Steve. But keep in mind
that Phyllis Kahn has been demonstrating her
dis-respect for the democratic process for at least
the past three years, most notably with her lawsuit to
overturn the 2001 Mpls. City Council elections where
two candidates from the Green Party defeated a
powerful encumbant (former City Council President
Jackie Cherryhomes) as well as an endorsed party
faithful (Dean Kallenbach) from the DFL. As far as I
know, local republicans have not challenged this
egregious use of the courts (perhaps because their own
party is guilty of mis-using the judicial system to
steal a Presidential election.

Becki Smith, from the Green Party, is also running
against Representative Kahn. Given the Republican
Party's current war against Minneapolis (and Saint
Paul as well), voters in Kahn's district would do well
to vote for Smith.

As for the DFL Party, they could do themselves a big
favor by asking Kahn to give up her seat.
