Absolutely! The City has done exactly that on 50th Street between France and Lyndale
and it is SLICK! Traffic moves along steadily at about 30mph, which is good for the
neighborhood, there is ample parking for the businesses and it is much less
stressful... no more getting stuck behind someone turning left or suddenly
encountering a parked car. Why they would not do the same thing for Lake Street is
baffling.

I think Janie is advocating the three lane approach? As a daily commuter on 50th St.,
I would say that Janie's comparison with Lake Street is misleading. There was really
only one usable lane on 50th before they made the change, since there were always some
cars parked in the second lane. Now they've striped the street so there is always one
drivable lane, and a center lane to turn left. As a commuter, I do find this
preferable to the old way. It's only those who want to park on the street that have
lost out. In fact, if you want to compare 50th to Lake, a similar approach to Lake
would be to go to 5 lanes, as has been suggested by some people (myself included).
That would take away some parking, but would enable traffic to move more smoothly.
