My neighborhood, the Sheridan Neighborhood in lovely lower NE MPLS, is about to loose just a bit of its beauty and wonder.
At 1506 2nd Street on the west side of the street there is an elm tree that has been tagged to come down. A concerned neighbor had Majestic Tree Care out to look at it today to see if it could be saved but there are a number of larger branches near the top that are too far along the Dutch Elm route for the tree to be saved by inoculation. Two grown men can not put their arms around this giant. This tree measures 180 inches in circumference. The "champion" elm tree in MN is located in Glencoe with a circumference of 186 inches. This tree was here before just about all the houses in NE. It was around when the Red River ox cart trail was running up and down what is now Marshall Street. It was around for the Indian uprising of 1862 and saw neighbor kids shipped off to that other war in the east. It saw the horses and wagons and street cars come and go, and it grew and grew. The side walk is curved around it like a crew neck sweater. This tree is estimated by Park and Rec. employees to be older than 150 years old. She has been marked to come down for over a month. Once the orange paint goes on the bark they are suppose to fall within 30 days. With trees like these it is no wonder I have bark marks on the inside of me arms and legs. Go take a gander at this giant soon cause she wont be there much longer.
