We agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment, and place our credentials as
advocates for pedestrian-friendly design against anyone's. Council Member
Dan Niziolek and his allies have the city's best interests at heart. But on
close inspection, the logic of the city plan dissolves rather quickly. 

It's Hennepin County that has the better idea, and this week the City
Council should approve the county's plan. Neighborhood hysteria over
"turning Lake Street into a five-lane freeway" is simply unfounded. The
county has designed an attractive urban street with a 30 mile-per-hour speed
limit and nearly 30 percent more sidewalk space than now exists.
