I agree, there have been some strong shop owners who have stayed along Lake
St, who would not have had to. It seems that Wells Fargo, Allinia and old
Honeywell should also get some kudos. The new housing area would not have
been done, they have programs for first time home buyers, train to work
programs and the fact that they are in the neighborhood gives strength to
the area.
As much as some of you like to complain...I would hate to see the
neighborhood without them.

Lake Street is a tired old woman. She needs a nip and tuck, a new dress,
perhaps a string of pearls. The new cultures and long existing ones have
given her some accessories for a pick me upper but the city needs to come in
with the wardrobe planner. All the little business nodes that have been done
by NRP or the City, in other areas, have been done very well. The
personality of Lake Street is not in the structure of the building..be it
wood or brick. It is in the people. Put green awnings on 3 buildings and
you will still see three different interpretations of businesses because of
the owners. The yuppies won't be moving in...it is not their area..

Except for the businesses at Chicago and Lake...I see nothing sacred to save
on that corner. The drug dealing and selling of stolen merchandise from the
locals is nothing to be preserved or be proud of. Lake Street will be
preserved, parking will be figured out, life will go on and perhaps a little
better than yesterday in a much safer environment and hopefully with less
fumes. It will still be unique, thanks to many people who have worked hard
just to keep her alive for the past 40 odd years.
