Clearly not everyone is capable of walking half a mile or more to catch a bus or train. And maybe that is the case with the one woman who got tired of her 30 minute bus ride, and decided instead to start driving the approximately 5 blocks from her house to the LRT station -- and then parking in the nearby neighborhood.

But does that strike anyone else as perhaps one of the reasons so many Americans are overweight? 5 blocks?

I am no model of fitness myself, but when I lived in Uptown, I walked 8 blocks every morning to catch the bus. It didn't kill me. In fact, it wasn't really all that strenuous unless I left late and then had to jog to make sure I didn't miss the bus.

64 percent of the parked cars in a recent survey were from Minneapolis neighborhoods within 2 miles (David's next post on this subject). I wonder what percentage was within 1 mile? That's an easy 15 to 20 minute walk, folks. It does world of good for the health, too.

Are there bike racks at the LRT stations? Maybe there should be. A 2 mile ride on a bicycle is likewise easily less than 15 minutes.

I'm astonished -- well, I guess I'm not, just baffled -- that people will actually drive their cars 5 blocks rather than walk (once again, assuming they are not somehow physically limited).
