Ummm, speaking of reality checks, here are a couple of points to
consider regarding the concerns that many people in Northeast have had
with the two previous Cub Foods proposals for Central Avenue:

1. Both proposals would have required massive city subsidies at a time
when such resources are in short supply. Many people believe such
corporate welfare is not appropriate given the many competing needs in
our city.
2. Both Cub proposals would have required the destruction of significant
amounts of affordable housing units and existing local businesses along
Central Ave.
3. Many of the residents that opposed the Cub proposals on Central have
nothing to do with the Eastside Food Co-op and don't shop there. They
still had legitimate concerns about displacement, traffic, and other
related issues.
4. The idea of the Eastside Food Co-op having a monopoly on groceries in
Northeast is absurd. There is a recently revamped Rainbow in the
Quarry, another Rainbow on Central close to the city limits in Columbia
Heights, a Cub Foods not much farther away, a recently expanded Sentryz
Grocery store on 2nd St., Rick's Market (now owned by Lund's), and a
host of ethnic oriented groceries stores, some substantial in size (Holy
Land, etc.).
5. Some items may appear expensive at a co-op but you sort of get what
you pay for in terms of quality. In addition there are bulk items that
offer savings if you are willing to put in a little effort. It also
isn't a case of one or the other. Many people shop at both the co-op
and at, say, Rainbow or other places.
