Thanks to John for pointing out the great maps in Victoria BC. As recent users of the Victoria maps, we could instantly see they'd be great in Mpls/St. Paul. A couple weeks ago, we flew from Mpls to Vancouver, and had a great urban transit experience getting to the Univ. of BC campus in Victoria. >From the Vancouver airport we took a bus to the ferry, a beautiful ferry trip to another bus that delivered us into downtown Victoria (buses are the first vehicles off the ferry). Then, with a 2 block walk and a 10 minute wait in downtown Victoria, we took another bus for 20 minutes to reach the campus of the UBC. All seamless, simple, pleasant, even with quite a few bags. In the evenings, we took the bus back into downtown Victoria to visit the city and the waterfront, a good Thai restaurant.... all with help from the maps... We took the same bus/ferry route in reverse a few days later as we headed to see friends in Vancouver for the rest of our trip. The ease of that trip to UBC made us realize how relatively difficult it would be to arrive at the Mpls airport and try to take public transit to the U of MN campus - although soon the LRT will soon get people right into downtown Mpls at least. In our case, LRT (combined with the #23 MTC bus) made it very easy to get to and from the airport and our home in Longfellow. Nice color maps like Victoria's would be a great addition here -- along with plenty more transit improvements. John's suggestions of locations for maps here sound good. (P.S. In Victoria, the rule is to the exit from the back door of the bus, and we noticed quickly that nearly every single passenger thanked the driver when exiting the bus - a fine tradition.) They are posting color maps on the traffic signal boxes around town. Provides a nice service, cheaply, and also may help reduce graffiti problems on the boxes. http://www.darrenbarefoot.com/archives/000950.html I could see this being done here, not only Downtown, but also along the LRT corridor and near some of the more heavily foot trafficed/touristy areas like by the Lakes, Uptown, 50th/France, etc. Should be fairly cheap to do, maybe even request a donation to defray costs from local business in exchange for a larger font or a small advert box?
