I live in the vicinity of the development in question and I am very informed about the
project. I have attended several meetings in the neighborhood and city hall regarding
this project. And I know for a fact that the neighbors and affected property owners
strongly support this project. In fact, in one meeting 75 Whittier people attended to
vote on the housing amendment. 71 people (including the Whittier Alliance chair)
voted in favor of the housing while only 4 voted against it. It then went on to be
approved by the City Planning Commission and the Zoning and Planning Committee. It
was only rejected by the City Council, and it was only because Ostrow broke the tie
vote. I also find it interesting that it was Schiff, who at the CPC hearing, asked
Sabri if he considered making the entire development housing. He was vehemently in
support of the housing until he shifted his position at the Z and P level.
I think people should not talk about the developer himself, but rather what kind of
impact this project will have on the community, including job creation, tax return and
an opportunity to provide housing for immigrants and minorities. I think these are
the issues the mayor had in mind when he vetoed the decision. The mayor was being
impartial and looked at the bigger picture. His decision reitterated me and my
husband's faith in the mayor's leadership and honesty.
