There seems to be confusion about credit checks versus a more in-depth background check. Craigslist.org has the following bit on credit checks at http://www.craigslist.org/about/credit.check.html :

"Saving Money on Credit Reports for Rental Applications

As you probably know, it's our philosophy that apartment seekers should not have to pay for the privilege of looking at apartment listings - by the same token, we hate to see you overpay for your own credit report.

Many landlords require a credit check as part of the application process, and it pays to have one in hand in case you encounter an apartment you really want.

Landlords are usually happy to run a credit report for you, but will generally charge $25-30 for this service.

Similiarly, several of the local rental listing agencies will sell you 2-3 copies of your report for $25-30, which you can then submit with your application(s).

Interestingly, almost all consumer credit checks in this country are done against just 3 credit agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

These days you can go directly to their websites, pay a $8-9 fee for a month's access, and print out as many copies of your credit report as you need (and you may qualify for a free report, see below). "

Hope this was useful to the debate,
