Greg Luce wrote that "most tenants would feel fine with a small ($1 to $5 increase) to have the protection of the ordinance."
Bill Cullen: Come on Greg. How can we -- at the same time -- argue that there is a horrible affordable housing crisis and then state that those in the midst of the crisis can afford to pay more to support a Minneapolis ordinance? Supporters of this ordinance must accept one of the following: a) This ordinance will lower the rental criteria for Minneapolis neighborhoods or b) we are shifting the cost of moving from the frequent movers to long term tenants (I have a few tenants that have been in their apartment > 30 years). I suspect the supporters hope Landlords will just eat the cost. Doubtful. After years of high vacancies, increasing utility and insurance costs, landlords are having a tough time paying the bills. Dyna Sluter wrote: "Well, at least dennyhecker.com doesn't charge an application fee... landlords, get with it!" Bill Cullen: Give us a few of the rights Denny Hecker and the Motel industry have and application fees would disappear. Give landlords: a) the right to change the locks on an apartment once a lease has been broken. Don't make us spend hundreds on a court action and wait weeks (or months) until we go through the courts to get rid of a problem tenant. And b) Don't hold Landlords accountable for lessee created problems. If a lessee of Denny Hecker's gets drunk, drives and kills someone, the press doesn't write about how Denny is a "slum-dealer." They blame the driver. But lease an apartment to a problem tenant and the press will write about how the landlord is a slumlord and the city of Mpls will try to pull our license or inspect us out of business. So, Dyna, I am ready, willing and HAPPY to "get with it." All I need are equal rights. Is Minneapolis ready to get with it? Regards, Bill Cullen Whittier Landlord P.S. Barb Lickness asked about the state created Crime Free Addendum. I know about it, include it in my lease, and like how it reads. However, I agree with Greg Luce. It is a growling dog with no bite. Even my (landlord biased) attorney says I have no legal right to enforce it. And I have never tried. REMINDERS: 1. Think a member has violated the rules?
