Steve Cross asked yesterday on the list for a comparison of the schools proposed for closing in February vs. now. So I did one that's on page B7 this morning, or via this link: http://24hour.startribune.com/login/?goto=http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/5031914.html
One reason that there wasn't such a comparison in Wednesday's paper is district's lack of cooperation in giving news reporters some data ahead of time so that we could do a more complete analysis and mapping of the proposal. This type of advance peek is commonly arranged by public relations professionals on an embargoed basis. This week's handling of the release was a contrast to how the February closing proposal was handled, when reporters had more time to analyze the proposal and gave more detailed coverage immediately. Maybe the difference reflects the turnover of five of seven workers in the district's communication department since late July. In any event, what got into Wednesday's paper reflected what could be done in a 15-hour workday on Tuesday that ended around midnight. There will be more stories. Doug Mann said in his post that the demographic consultant to the facilities consultant didn't produce a written report. That's incorrect. I know because I was reading it at four this morning. It has been available on the district's web site since mid-day yesterday, as our list manager noted. Steve Brandt Staff writer Star Tribune Phone: 612-673-4438 Fax: 612-673-4359 425 Portland Av.
