Ooops. Forgot to sign off at the end. One more time with feeling..... :-)
Mark Anderson: Sure I feel really ashamed because I think the number one goal of the school system should be to get kids to read and add. And you are outraged at the idea of dropping the arts in school because, after all, your daughter likes them. The World has turned upside down. I thought we were all on the same side, but you are putting doubt in my mind. I always thought that it was important to lay out priorities for all public spending, because we never have as much as we'd like. I also believe that to solve the problem of illiteracy and innumeracy in our schools that we need to focus on the problem. Some may feel that it is ridiculous to debate some subjects. I think the lack of debate on the key issues is the main problem. We all want more money, but if it's not there, we need to decide how to spend what we have. I respond: I am not outraged. I never said that. And the world still seems right side up to me. Yes, she enjoys the arts. Yes, I do believe that having children involved and learning in them offers an outlet that is very necessary and hopeful. I also know very well that reading and math are VITAL for our kids. What I was saying was not that it was ridiculous to debate on the key issues. What I was saying was that it's ridiculous that they even have to be debated. The money needs to be there for all of it. We are all on the same side, Mark. But if we're willing to accept, debate about or settle for less, that's exactly what we'll have.
