But for many good reasons otherwise our city should not only allow but encourage high fences in the criminal containment zones such as Hawthorne. Minneapolis needs to face reality and realize that young gangbangers can be over the maximum permitted front yard fence in a second, and some of them can get over taller fences pretty quick too. So we need the ability to put up at least 8 foot tall fences with razor wire on top if needed. We also need the authority to push those fences all the way out to the sidewalk, forcing the criminals into the street and making it easier for our police to apprehend them.

WM: I think that iron pipe about 3 ft. back from the sidewalk and barberry bushes, trimmed to be thick at base and upward, were better than a front fence. They're very nasty to go through, having a thorn that drops a little histamine (sp?) into the body that itches like the very devil for quite a while. They can be kept below 4 ft. and still do the job. Also, they're beautiful, particularly in the fall. One called "rosy glow" is pink and green throughout the season.

In the back yard, the alley fence should be solid, but the side fences should be see through so you and your neighbors can help each other. Motion detector lights are really a good idea too.
